Does God Need You?
I’m sure we’ve all heard how special we are in God’s sight. In one sense we are each uniquely created by Him, so every one of us could be considered one of God’s masterpieces. Many would say it stands to reason that since God is like a “Giant Picasso,” then we are all the ‘Girl Before a Mirror’. God wouldn’t be God without us, right? If we didn’t exist, nobody would know God’s true talent and He would probably be some depressed dude sitting anonymously in a corner somewhere, paintbrush wet with His tears of loneliness and despair. Umm, no. Have you read the beginning of Genesis BEFORE He created humans?! Not only is He not lacking in the talent department, God doesn’t need us at all! To believe otherwise is an act of self-love on our part, not worship of God.
I imagine this may be a tough pill to swallow for some. Christians should understand and value the fact that we can have a relationship with God. Relationships are important. In what relationship is there NOT mutual dependence to some extent? Well, this one! It doesn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy to hear that God doesn’t need you does it? If anybody else told you that, you’d rightfully feel rejected and question your worth. But God’s not just anybody and He put those questions to rest when Jesus died for our sins! So, can you put your feelings aside or is self-love still of utmost importance to you?
Finding our worth and purpose in Jesus is not just the best way because God designed it that way, but if we’re honest it’s WAY better than anything we could dream up and well beyond what we are capable of doing on our own. God is perfect, lacking nothing! Who do we think we are that we could give something to God which He needs? To genuinely believe that is to say God is not perfect and lacks what only we are able to give. That’s absurd! We like to throw around the phrase, “Don’t mess with perfection,” so why when we are dealing with true perfection in God do we choose to use another mantra? Could it be because we love ourselves more than God and we’ve tricked ourselves into believing God needs us. God doesn’t need me or you! In fact, just the opposite is true — we need Him!
