Sometimes one of the hardest things to do is find rest. We seem to be pretty good at finding ways to physically, mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually exhaust ourselves. People and circumstances in our lives can usually give us a hand in this area too. When we talk about Jesus being our Lord and Savior, we often focus on the ‘Savior’ part. It feels good to be saved from something bad, right? Also, the thought of something being instantly taking care of is very attractive, especially in modern times. It’s the ‘Lord’ part that can be tougher for many reasons.
We don’t want to hand over the reins. (“It’s my life.”)
We don’t want to take the time to know Him and what He says. (So how can we really know who to follow and what to do?)
When things go wrong, we think we know how to solve them. (How’s that working out?)
We don’t want to admit we need help. (Macho, macho man…)
We don’t really believe Jesus can or is willing to walk with or help us in our times of greatest need. (Lack of faith? Guilt of sin?)
I don’t know which one of these reasons (or another) is obstructing you from seeing Jesus as Lord. However, I do know you can still come to Him and find rest.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. — Matthew 11:27-30
This song by Jordan Kauflin & Matt Merker is a good way to help you find some of that rest. I hope you will carefully consider the lyrics.
It’s hard to pick a favorite verse, but I’ll post the first one along with the chorus:
Are you weary, heavy laden?
Come and lay your burdens down
Jesus calls you, Jesus draws you,
Rest in Him
He is gentle, he is lowly
He delights to bring us peace
Tender shepherd, mighty Savior
Rest in him
How sure, his compassion for us
Oh how deep is his love,
So come, come to Jesus, and rest in him
Have a great Sunday, folks. Remember to come to Jesus, and rest in Him!
