Clean Hands & Pure Hearts
I imagine many of us got our hands dirty and did some damage to our hearts with the food we ate yesterday on Thanksgiving. It’s time for some clean hands and pure hearts. I’m talking about spiritually more than physically, though both are important.
After I finished eating my Thanksgiving lunch, I saw a direct message from a fellow believer in Christ. This friend was struggling. We chatted for awhile about the situation, directed the conversation toward God, and our talk ended much more positively than it began. One thing that has always stood out to me about this friend is their pure heart and willingness to seek God no matter what, while never refraining from sharing the true pain they are feeling. That’s no easy thing to do.
In my own life, I’ve also seen a need for a pure heart in certain areas. Maybe some of you reading this feel the same and have been engaging with God to address certain things in your lives. One song that I remember first hearing when I was in Kona, Hawaii about 17 years ago is Give Us Clean Hands. I recall wanting to hear it over and over. I borrowed my friend’s Ipod any chance I had so I could keep listening to this song. Of course, after awhile I started to get sick of this song because I listened to it so many times. If I’m honest, it also gets tiring to continuously seek God after stumbling so many times and turning to other things. Yet, there is no other way. I’m thankful to have access to a living God who is the ONLY WAY to give us clean hands and pure hearts!
Give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Oh God let this be
A generation that seeks
Who seeks your face
Oh God of Jacob
